The Days of the Week, Months and Seasons of The Year in Portuguese

Here is some vocab for the seasons in Portuguese. Remember that since it is in the Southern hemisphere, Brazil’s seasons occur opposite to ours in the Northern Hemisphere.

as estações do ano – the seasons of the year

ano bissexto – leap year

um ano – a year

estação – season

inverno – winter

primavera – spring

verão – summer

outono – autmn/fall

These are the days of the week in Portuguese. Keep in mind that the word “feira” is often dropped when people talk about the days. For example, “Segunda eu trabalho” – “I work on Monday.” The word feira can be confusing because in Portuguese, this word alone means street fair, or outdoor market, (feiras are very common in Brazil – they are a great place to buy cheap clothes and other things.) The Portuguese “feira” comes from the Latin ‘feria’ which means ‘free day’. So we also have the Portuguese words férias (vacation) and feriado (holiday). When you say “estou de férias,” it means “i’m on vacation.” Please note that the days of the week are never capitalized in Portuguese.

um dia – day (this is one of those words that looks like it should be feminine but is really masculine)

segunda-feira – monday

terça-feira – tuesday

quarta-feira – wednesday

quinta-feira – thursday

sexta-feira – friday

sábado – saturday

domingo – sunday

os dias da semana – the days of the week

uma semana – a week

“the face of monday”

These are the months of the year in Brazilian Portuguese. Months are also lowercase in written Portuguese:

janeiro

fevereiro

março

abril

maio

junho

julho

agosto

setembro

outubro

novembro

dezembro

um mês – a month
